Phil was born in Dorchester and brought up in the local town of Blandford Forum. At the age of sixteen he studied at The Jellicoe Theatre, part of the Bournemouth and Poole College of Further Education, where he was awarded a BETEC National Diploma in Performing Arts (Production) with three distinctions. At seventeen he left The Jellicoe and went on to join the full time team at Lighthouse (Poole's Centre for the Arts), the largest arts centre's outside of London, as Head of Electrics.

Away from Lighthouse, Phil spent his time as a freelance lighting and video designer working closely with local companies in the South producing theatre, dance and concerts.
In October 2008, he launched his first company meadia continuing in the strong foundations of his freelance career.
